Leadership Lessons for a Shrinking Church

Friday, March 13 2026

1:15pm – 2:15pm,

Guigues Room 126 & Zoom

A Hybrid Event – Leadership Lessons for a Shrinking Church A Public Conversation with Rev. Dr. William Harrison, President, Lutheran Theological Seminary, and Dr. K. Melchin, Emeritus Professor at Saint Paul University.

You are invited to attend, listen, and participate in a discussion (hybrid – in person AND on zoom) between the Rev. Dr. William Harrison, President, Lutheran Theological Seminary and Dr. Ken Melchin about the roles of leadership, transformation, and insight in tackling “the shrinking Church.”

Dr. Harrison, a graduate of Saint Paul University, shares candid insights from his own journey—from growing up in a fundamentalist tradition to leading in ecumenical and academic contexts. He reflects on why complexity is not something to fear, why “do less with less” might be the most faithful strategy today, and how congregations can reclaim a gospel vision rooted in transformation rather than numbers.

Dr. Melchin, a Professor Emeritus at Saint Paul University, with more than 35 years of teaching theology and theological ethics, engages with Dr. Harrison from an insight-centered approach, which highlights the operative thirst in the human soul for meaning and transcendence.
The first half of this event will be a public conversation between Dr. Harrison and Dr. Melchin and the second half will be opened up to questions, comments, and further discussion from all participants, both in-the-room and on zoom.

  • The first half of this event will be a public conversation.
  • The second half will invite questions, comments, and further discussion from all participants both in-the-room and on Zoom.
  • Light refreshments will be served.

“Only when the other has been heard and knows that they have been heard, will it be time to speak my story, with the prayer to God that I may truly be a transformational divine word to the other.”

The Rev. Dr. W. Harrison
