Saint Paul University Celebrates the Class of 2025

News

On Monday, June 16, Saint Paul University honoured more than 200 graduates during its convocation ceremonies, held in the historic De Mazenod Chapel. Surrounded by their families, faculty, and peers, graduates marked the end of one transformative journey—and the beginning of another.

A powerful message from Rector Louis Patrick Leroux

Rector Louis Patrick Leroux opened the ceremony with a heartfelt reflection on education and its purpose:

“This education is built on the shoulders of so many others who are helping you attain your potential. What will you do with this legacy? Do you want to live in a society of takers or givers?”

Calling for critical thought and moral courage, he continued:

“Conflict and strife are on the rise in society, as bullying has become a form of governing, exclusion a form of social cohesion, and monologues and diatribes replace conversation. […] You are called to be a force of good, open to discussion, caring for, and especially, helping your fellow humans.”

His final call to action invited graduates to think beyond themselves:

“How will I benefit from my degree, you ask yourself, at the start of your studies. By the end, hopefully, you ask yourself: What will my contribution be?”

Two honorary doctorates awarded

Saint Paul University also awarded two honorary doctorates to distinguished individuals whose work reflects the values upheld by our institution:

  • Madam Michèle Audette, senator and Indigenous rights advocate (morning ceremony)
  • Colonel Michel Drapeau, lawyer and defender of military rights (afternoon ceremony)

Their actions, as noted by the Rector, “live up to our moral ambitions.”

The heartfelt testimonies of Rose Turgeon and Gayle Joly., valedictorians

Rose Turgeon, Major de promotion

Rose Turgeon delivered a sincere and grounded message about the challenges, discoveries, and human connections made along the way:

“Today marks the end of our journey, but also the beginning of a new one. […] With this degree finally in hand, I can sincerely say it was all worth it. This academic journey taught us discipline, helped us push our limits… and above all, helped us discover who we are.”

She added:

“What I remember most about my time here at Saint Paul University are the extraordinary people I’ve had the chance to meet: other students from different cultures, my friends, and my professors. I also developed true friendships that I’ll treasure forever.”

Gayle Joly, Major de promotion

Gayle Joly., a Blackfoot woman from Treaty 7 territory, offered a deeply spiritual and powerful reflection:

“We are the dream of our ancestors. Many of those who came before us did not have the privilege to study, to question, to heal, or to hope as freely as we do today. Their sacrifices, strength, and silent prayers brought us to this moment.”

She also reminded the audience:

“True leadership doesn’t come from power over others but from standing in our truth and making room for others to do the same.”

Governor General’s Academic Medals

This year, the University awarded its top academic honours to:

  • Gold Medal: Jennifer Bruce
PhD in Philosophy – Interdisciplinary Research on Contemporary Social Issues
  • Silver Medal: Jessica Fenney
Honours BA in Human Relations and Spirituality, with a Minor in Theology

Congratulations to the Class of 2025!
