The Different Types of Courses
All courses offered at Saint Paul University have an online component via a learning management system named BrighSpace. However, Adobe Connect, Zoom or Teams can also be used.
All electronic communications between professors and students happen via the @ustpaul.ca email system for professors and via the @uottawa.ca email system for students.
Four types of courses are offered at Saint Paul University:
In-class courses
- This type of course is offered in the classroom, in the presence of the professor and students.
Distance courses
- This type of course is broadcast live (in synchronous mode) by the professor via the learning management system.
- Students can log on to the course in real time (in synchronous mode) or, if the course has been recorded, in delayed mode (in asynchronous mode). Important: not all distance courses are recorded.
- Even when some courses are at times given simultaneously in the classroom and remotely, a student registered in a distance course cannot attend in class. In the same way, a student registered in an in-class course must attend classes in person.
Online courses
- This type of course is pre-recorded and offered only online (in asynchronous mode) via the learning management system.
Hybrid courses
This type of course combines two types of courses. Here are the most common examples:
- Part of the course is offered online (in asynchronous mode); the other part is offered as a distance course (in synchronous mode).
- Part of the course is offered online (in asynchronous mode); the other part of the course is offered in-class on predetermined dates.
- Part of the course is offered at a distance (sometimes mandatory synchronous, sometimes synchronous or asynchronous); the other part of the course is offered in-class on predetermined dates.
Courses are supported by a technical team that responds to the needs of students and professors.
