OTTAWA, Friday, May 13, 2022 – Today, Saint Paul University awarded the Right Reverend Shane Parker, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, with the doctorate honoris causa.
The doctorate honoris causa — commonly known as an honorary doctorate — is the highest honour a university can bestow. It is granted to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the University, to their profession or to society.
“I am deeply touched by this gracious ecumenical gesture,” said Bishop Parker, “which celebrates a rich history of partnering together to prepare Anglicans for ministry and service in our community.”
In his nomination letter, the previous Director of Anglican Studies, Canon Kevin Flynn, writes that “Bishop Parker’s career is a good example of the living out of Saint Paul University’s mission in integrating Christian faith and life, and in promoting the values of Christian humanism.”
Bishop Parker has worked to create a more open and diverse Church. He has been recognized for his efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperation. He has also shown an ongoing commitment to reconciliation by building meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples by creating opportunities for non-indigenous people to hear Indigenous voices.
Longstanding Member of the SPU Community
Bishop Parker, holding two degrees in sociology, began his relationship with Saint Paul University as a Bachelor of Theology student in the Anglican Studies program. Since graduation, he has gone on to teach and serve on several committees at the University.
“Bishop Parker has been an important part of the SPU community for many years and it is a privilege for us to celebrate his contributions to the University, the Anglican Church and the broader Ottawa community by awarding him this honorary doctorate,” shared Chantal Beauvais, Rector of Saint Paul University.
Bishop Parker is the first graduate of SPU’s Anglican Studies program to be ordained a bishop in the Anglican Church of Canada.
