From the Headlines to Harm: Media, Othering and the Responsibility of Leadership

Members of the community are invited to attend a guest lecture by Amira Elghawaby, entitled “From the Headlines to Harm: Media, Othering and the Responsibility of Leadership,” on November 18, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.

How do headlines become harm? Drawing on her experience in journalism and public service, Elghawaby will explore how media framing casts Muslims as the “other,” the consequences for communities, and the responsibility of leaders in building a strong and inclusive Canada.

Amira Elghawaby is the Founder and Executive Director of the Muslim Communities Research Observatory and served as Canada’s first Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia.

Admission is free, and registration is recommended. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

This lecture is co-presented by the School of Social Communication, the School of Leadership, Ecology and Equity, and the Settler Colonialism Working Group.
