Established this year, the Michael Machan Memorial Award recognizes a registered psychotherapist who demonstrates service to the profession and a commitment to ongoing professional development – both personally and by supporting their peers.
Machan completed his Master’s in Counselling and Spirituality in 2013 and went on to contribute his talents to the University in several roles – including clinical supervisor, Coordinator of Professional Services, and the Director of the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre.
“Throughout his six years at Saint Paul University, Michael’s commitment, professionalism, and dedication were evident in everything he did,” shared Buuma Maisha, Director of the School of Counselling, Psychotherapy and Spirituality. “We remain deeply grateful for his service and will continue to recognize and remember the meaningful legacy he has left within our school and the broader psychotherapy training community.”
Under his exemplary leadership as Director, the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre underwent substantial development and modernization, including its relocation to a newer facility and the enhancement of technological infrastructure to support students’ clinical training and learning experiences.
“As a respected leader in the field of psychotherapy, Michael’s value-based leadership and commitment to advancing the profession have left a lasting impact, both at the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre and within the broader psychotherapy community. His contributions and dedication to the profession will be remembered with gratitude,” shared Janet Cullen, Director of the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre, who worked with Michael at the CRPO.
In addition to his contributions to the University, Michael had a successful private practice and was actively involved with the CRPO.
The call for nominations for the inaugural Michael Machan Memorial Award is open until November 30, 2026. The award will be presented at the CRPO town hall in 2027.
