Course Description

A practical study of the “proactive” and “reactive” responses of the Advocates in the canonical processes, with a special reference to the substantive penal law and the application of penal process (preliminary investigation, judicial and extrajudicial processes).

For Saint Paul University students, the seminar may be taken for credit by registering in DCA 6366 Special Problems in Canon Law VI: Penal Law for Ecclesiastical Advocates (1.5 u). Regular tuition fees will be applied.

John Renken:

Monsignor John Renken is former dean of Canon Law.  Writing and lecturing on penal law, he is experienced as penal judge, promoter of justice, advocate. In 2024 he published The Penal Law of the Roman Catholic Church. Substantive Law.

Alexander Laschuk:

Fr Alexander Laschuk is a priest of the Eparchy of Toronto and judicial vicar of the Toronto Regional Tribunal. He has extensive experience in penal trials across North America.
