Celebrating the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), the seminar will examine this Council from the original sources, including its historical and theological context; the formation of canon law; the development of a conciliar model; and its later reception.

Speaker

Prof. Susan Wessel

Prof. Susan Wessel, who holds a PhD, Columbia University and a JD, Harvard University, is the James H. and Mary F. Moran Professor of Early Church History at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.  Among her specialties are Greek Patristics, the history of the Councils, Christology, and Moral Psychology and the Emotions.   She is the author of several books and numerous articles, including Passion and Compassion in Early Christianity (Cambridge University Press) and Cyril of Alexandria and the Nestorian Controversy (Oxford University Press).
