May 21 – 1:00PM – 2:30PM / AUDITORIUM (110 Hazel St)
This conference, presented in partnership with the Turkish Embassy in Ottawa, will explore Mevlevi music—the most refined and developed branch of Turkish Sufi music from the Ottoman era. Rooted in the poetry and spiritual writings of prominent Mevlevi figures, especially Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, this musical tradition represents the pinnacle of melodic and rhythmic expression in Ottoman classical music. The event will also feature live performances by Fikret Karakaya on the kemenche and Nicolas Royer-Artuso on the oud.
Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of traditional Turkish cuisine, offered free of charge as part of the cultural experience.
