Les intérêts de recherche du professeur Philip Onguny s’articulent autour de trois grands thèmes: violences politiques, conflicts identitaires, et le rôle des médias dans la transformation des conflits et construction de la paix. Il s’intéresse également aux politiques de développement international et à l’action humanitaire dans les sociétés fragiles et/ou touchées par les conflits. Professeur Onguny mène présentement un projet de recherche financé par le CRSH qui vise à élaborer une typologie compréhensive afin de mieux comprendre les principaux enjeux de la violence ethno-politique et conflits fonciers en Afrique. Ce projet est réalisé à partir d’une ethnographie multi-située au Kenya.

Mes recherches actuelles, financées par le Conseil de Recherches en Sciences Humaines (CRSH), visent à élaborer une typologie compréhensive permettant d’expliquer comment, pourquoi, et par qui la violence électorale et les conflits fonciers sont encouragés en Afrique Subsaharienne. Ce projet de deux ans (2017-2019) est basé sur l’ethnologie multi-situé au Kenya.
