Summary

This course consists of two interlinked components: (1) the examination of the variable linkages between inequality (economic, social, political), injustice, and violent conflict; and (2) the examination of efforts to create environments characterized by equality, equity, justice and peace.

Objectives

To enable the student (1) to understand the multiple aspects of inequality: horizontal, vertical, and structural; (2) their impact on different sectors of society: women, children, minorities, etc. By the end of the course the student will also be able (3) to analyse the causes of conflict related to injustice whether they be political, social, ideological or religious; as well as (4) to envision possible solutions in general and specific contexts. (5) Familiarity with concrete theoretical approaches (capability, basic needs, etc. for example) will be attained. Consequently, a comprehensive developmental emphasis is placed on practical approaches.

Workload

Readings and in-class participation (10%); three individual papers (45%), and bi-weekly online discussion forum (15%) with at least one original posting and one response; final research paper (30%) on a select topic in consultation with the instructor. First assignment is due on: 31st Jan.2018. Further due dates and more details will be available in the syllabus (to be posted at LMS/BrightSpace site by 15th Dec. 2017) and explained in the class during the first two weeks.

Assessment

All your written assignments will be evaluated on the following criteria, unless otherwise indicated: 1. Comprehension (80%): PAPERS should clearly bring out the main points discussed; if they summarize an essay, it should be done in your OWN WORDS, and indicate the connections between the main points. 2. Clarity of text (20%): correct grammar, spelling, and good style (no clumsy, long and cluttered sentences). 3. In-time submission; all delayed submissions will lose 1% of the total points (15 for semester papers and 30 for final research paper), unless for justified (e.g., health) reasons. 4. With respect to ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUM, it is expected that you concentrate discussion on the reading or topic suggested; and your argument is substantiated.
