Spirituality and Adaptation to Illness

This course examines the phenomenology and etiology of health and ill-health. It stresses the creation of opportunities for healthy human and spiritual growth: selfcare, primary nurturing environments, professional caring community, pastoral care and other cares. It also deals with the stressors which exacerbate certain kinds of illness, their systemic implications and their effects on individuals, families and communities. In particular, it covers the role of the pastoral caregiver in working with the chronic precipitating factors in facilitating growth towards wholeness: fear, guilt, inadequacy, broken relationships, etc., in facilitating hope, forgiveness, self-value, human growth and spirituality.

Sommaire

This course examines the phenomenology and etiology of health and ill-health. It stresses the creation of opportunities for healthy human and spiritual growth: selfcare, primary nurturing environments, professional caring community, pastoral care and other cares. Objectifs

Through the course students will:

  • understand the relationship between physical and mental health
  • identify ways to support individuals to adapt to the onset of illness
  • explain how spirituality can facilitate adaptation to chronic disease
  • describe and compare the stages of adaptation as well as coping strategies;
  • understand and evaluate current research in health psychology and spirituality; and
  • integrate theories and research evidence in health psychology and spirituality to communicate a convincing argument.  
Charge de travail

This course will require weekly readings and regular participation in lectures, including activities and discussions.

Évaluation

In addition to regular participation in class, students will be required to complete the following:

  • Mid-term presentation
  • Final presentation
  • Research paper
  • Weekly reflexive journal entries
