The Faculty of Human Sciences at Saint Paul University offers a graduate program leading to a Graduate Diploma in Couple Counselling and Spirituality. This diploma is conferred jointly by the Senates of Saint Paul University and the University of Ottawa under the terms of the federation agreement between them.

Professionals who seek to update their credentials and skills in the area of couple therapy, by completing the Diploma, will have met the requirements, in the area of theory and therapy, of the marriage and family courses required towards certification by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). AAMFT Clinical Membership pre-requisites include three master’s courses in MFT theory and three courses in MFT training.

This program is intended for professionals who are already experienced counselors and who would like to specialize in couple counselling.

Admission to the graduate programs in counselling and spirituality is governed by the General Regulations of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS).

Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree with honours or with a major in a related discipline such as counselling, spirituality, practical theology, health care, psychology, social work, pastoral studies or a discipline judged equivalent to these;
  • Completion of 24 credits in total in psychology and sociology;
  • Completion of 6 credits in theology or religious studies or a discipline deemed equivalent*;
  • Completion of a counselling training with clinical experience (a minimum of 120 hours of supervised direct, face-to-face, contact with clients);
  • An average of at least 70% (B) calculated in accordance with FGPS guidelines.

A maximum of three credits in equivalencies or advanced standing may be granted. To be eligible, the credits in question must not have counted towards the requirements of a previous diploma or degree. Candidates who have already successfully completed some of the compulsory credits may be allowed to replace those credits with elective credits. Transfer from Graduate Diploma to MA Degree Program

Students registered in the graduate diploma program can request to transfer to the MA in Counselling and Spirituality in accordance with regulation A. 7.1 of the "General regulations" of the FGPS.

*Students wishing to pursue their studies in counselling and spirituality at the master's level must complete an additional 6 credits in theology, religious studies or a discipline deemed equivalent (for a total of 12 credits) prior to submitting their application for admission to the master's.

Course Sequence
The compulsory courses will be offered every year.

Minimum Standards

The passing grade in all courses is C+. Students who fail two courses (equivalent to 6 credits) or the same course twice must withdraw from the program.

Duration of the Program

The requirements of the diploma must be fulfilled within three years of initial registration in the program.

IPA 5131 - METHODOLOGY OF EMPIRICAL RESEARCH (3cr.)

This course helps the students to develop skills for the critical evaluation of empirical research in the human sciences and the application of these skills in graduate research projects and theses. Qualitative and quantitative methods of gathering and validating scientific evidence in observation, case, evaluation, correlational and experimental studies. The formation of problems, structured questions, causal and non-causal hypotheses; operational definitions; dependent, extraneous and randomized variables; the selection of samples. Research ethics will be examined.

IPA 5134 - SPIRITUALITY, COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (3cr.)

Space for reflection, deepening and integration of various perspectives, with particular attention to the spiritual dimension of the practice of psychotherapy, and that of the psychotherapist. Examination of various spiritual paradigms so as to identify certain points of convergence that are useful for understanding the issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion, an approach to reflection on practice is proposed, to support and promote the professional development of the psychotherapist and the safe and effective use of self. Presentation of psychospiritual models of intervention for the purpose of providing clinical and practical approaches.

IPA 5138 - THEORIES OF FAMILY SYSTEMS AND INTERVENTION (3cr.)

This course presents a history of the family systems theories with individuals, couples, and families with a major focus on advanced family systems theories and interventions.Theories covered include Structural, Strategic, Bowen, Narrative, Solution Focused and more. Attention is paid to assessment of functional and dysfunctional family systems. The student/practitioner will learn interviewing, assessment and restructuring techniques, and how to explore family rules, systems, values and boundaries

IPA 5144 - SPIRITUALITY AND COUNSELLING (3cr.)

Introduction to spirituality as an essential dimension of human experience across the lifespan. Key concepts and theories of spiritual development and their relevance to clinical evaluation and treatment from spiritual and psychological perspectives. The different expressions of spirituality, the relationship between stages of moral development and images of the divine and transcendent, and the dialogue between spirituality and psychology. The importance of psychology in discerning between a healthy spirituality, which is enriching for the person and for their integral development, and a spirituality that must be called unhealthy, which eliminates human freedom, autonomy and responsibility.

IPA 5146 - PROFESSIONAL ETHICS (3cr.)

Introduction to the major ethical issues in counselling and psychotherapy (e.g., confidentiality and its limits, informed consent, record keeping, multiple roles, conflicts of interest, self-disclosure, power inequalities, respect for professional boundaries, limits of competence) and the laws governing these issues. Exploration of the process of resolving ethical dilemmas and ethical decision-making, as well as the use of supervision, peer consultation and other professional resources. Presentation of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario through its membership process, code of ethics, standards of professional practice, professional obligations (professional insurance, participation in the quality assurance program, continuing education, supervision, mandatory reporting)and disciplinary process. Difference between professional associations and professional orders. Research ethics.

IPA 5149 - PROFESSIONAL ISSUES AND ETHICS IN SPIRITUAL CARE (3cr.)

This course introduces the student to professional issues and ethical concerns which shape and flow from the caring context in health care services. The student is oriented to the process of ethical and professional standards and their implementation. Using case histories and ethical dilemmas the student is guided in dealing with both general and specific professional concerns such as the use of ethical frames of reference in decision making, respect for liberty in the formation of conscience, the need for and the limits of confidentiality, the use of charting research questions in health care, and the impact of teamwork in patient care. The students will also be invited to grapple with specific moral issues such as abortion, euthanasia, life prolongation, and the use of scarce resources.

IPA 5531 - MÉTHODOLOGIE DE LA RECHERCHE EMPIRIQUE (3cr.)

Ce cours permet à l’étudiant d’acquérir les habiletés requises pour évaluer la recherche empirique dans les sciences humaines et appliquer ces habiletés aux projets de recherche ou à la thèse de maîtrise. On étudie les méthodes qualitatives et quantitatives utilisées pour recueillir et vérifier les données scientifiques: l’observation, les études de cas, les études évaluatives, les études expérimentales et de corrélations; la formulation de problématiques, de questions de recherche, d’hypothèses causales et non causales, de définitions opérationnelles et d’échantillons; de variables dépendantes, indépendantes, accessoires, choisies au hasard. Ce cours examine les problèmes d’éthique reliés à la recherche.

IPA 5534 - SPIRITUALITÉ, COUNSELLING ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE (3cr.)

Espace de réflexions, d’approfondissement et d’intégration des divers savoirs, en portant une attention particulière à la dimension spirituelle de la pratique de la psychothérapie et celle, bien singulière, des psychothérapeutes. Examen de divers paradigmes spirituels en vue de dégager certains points de convergence utile à la compréhension des enjeux d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion, en plus d’une démarche de réflexion sur la pratique, dans le but du développement professionnel des psychothérapeutes ainsi que l’utilisation sûre et efficace de soi. Présentation de modèles d’intervention psychospirituels en vue d’offrir des pistes cliniques et pratiques.

IPA 5538 - THÉORIES DU SYSTÈME FAMILIAL ET DE SES MODES D'INTERVENTION (3cr.)

Le cours trace une histoire des théories des systèmes familiaux lesquels incluent les individus, les couples et les familles. L’emphase sera mise sur les théories systémiques et sur les interventions avancées. Les théories structurelle, stratégique, de Bowen, narrative et centrée sur la solution seront étudiées, ainsi que l’évaluation des systèmes familiaux fonctionnels et dysfonctionnels. L’étudiant apprendra aussi des techniques d’entrevues, d’évaluation et de restructuration et comment explorer les règles, les systèmes, les valeurs et les frontières familiales.

IPA 5544 - SPIRITUALITÉ ET COUNSELLING (3cr.)

La spiritualité comme une dimension essentielle de l’expérience humaine tout au long de la vie. Les concepts et théories clés du développement spirituel et leur pertinence dans l’évaluation et le traitement cliniques d’une perspective spirituelle et psychologique. Différentes expressions de la spiritualité du rapport entre les étapes du développement moral et les images du divin et du transcendant et du dialogue entre la spiritualité et la psychologie. L’importance de la psychologie pour faire le discernement entre une spiritualité saine, qui est enrichissante pour la personne et pour son développement intégral, et une spiritualité malsaine qui élimine chez la personne la liberté, l’autonomie et la responsabilité.

IPA 5546 - ÉTHIQUE PROFESSIONNELLE (3cr.)

Initiation aux principaux enjeux éthiques du counselling et de la psychothérapie (confidentialité et ses limites, consentement éclairé, tenue de dossiers, multiplicité de rôles, conflits d’intérêts, divulgation de soi, inégalités de pouvoir, respect des frontières professionnelles, limites de la compétence) et les lois la régissant. Étude de la résolution de dilemmes éthiques et de la prise de décision éthique, ainsi que les recours à la supervision, à la consultation avec les pairs et à d’autres ressources professionnelles. Présentation de l’Ordre des psychothérapeutes autorisés de l’Ontario via son processus d’affiliation, son code déontologique, ses normes de pratique professionnelle, ses obligations professionnelles (assurance professionnelle, participation au programme d’assurance de la qualité, formation continue, supervision, signalements obligatoires) et son processus discipline.  Distinction entre les associations professionnelles et les ordres professionnels. Éthique de la recherche.

IPA 5549 - QUESTIONS PROFESSIONNELLES ET QUESTIONS D'ÉTHIQUE EN SOINS SPIRITUELS (3cr.)

Ce cours initie l’étudiant aux questions professionnelles d’éthique relatives aux services en soins de santé. L’étudiant apprend les normes professionnelles d’éthique et leur application en milieu hospitalier. Par le biais d’études de cas et de situations d’éthique difficiles, l’étudiant examine des questions d’ordre général, mais aussi des questions professionnelles plus spécifiques, i.e., l’utilisation des règles d’éthique au moment de la prise de décision, le respect de la liberté de conscience, le besoin de confidentialité et ses limites, la formulation de questions de recherche en soins de santé, et l’influence du travail d’équipe dans les soins apportés aux patients. L’étudiant aborde des questions d’éthique et de morale telles l’avortement, l’euthanasie et le prolongement de la vie. Enfin, il apprend à travailler avec des ressources souvent limitées.

IPA 6108 - PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND TREATMENT (3cr.)

Concepts such as normality and abnormality, and the inter-relationship of perceptual, cognitive and affective dimensions are discussed. Motivational, social, behavioural and inter-personal components of human functioning and reviewed. This course presents the mental disorders, distinguishing the neurotic and psychotic disorders. The neuroses, transient reactions to stress, psychological factors in physical illnesses, personality disorders and affective disorders are treated in depth. Each class of disorders is viewed from the point of view of its etiology, diagnostic indicators, assessment, research and treatment. An explanation of the factors that foster an individual’s invulnerability to stress, trauma, and genetic predispositions is presented. The interplay of stressors, interpersonal and intrapersonal resources, life history and community is emphasized in the etiology and course of the disorders and normal functioning. Disordered functioning is seen as a person’s attempt to come to terms with the demands of living.

IPA 6120 - THEORIES OF INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (3cr.)

This course provides a brief overview of the history of counselling theory and its orientations and trends. It attends to the nature of theory building and its interconnection to practice and research. It presents, critically in depth, representative theories from the current major orientations (e.g., experiential, cognitive, psychodynamic, behavioural) with a focus on the integration of understanding, assessment and treatment in the counselling process. In the presentation of theories, attention is given to the integration of theory, research and practice. Each theory is discussed with reference to its practical application, effectiveness and limitations. The manner in which one or more of these theories has been applied to pastoral counselling practice and in the development of pastoral counselling models, and in the development of a person’s spiritual and religious life is covered. 

IPA 6135 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY I (PART 1 OF 2) (3cr.)

Introduction tobasic trans-theoretical skills, client needs assessment (intake interview), charting, confidentiality and informed consent, and safe and effective use of self. Other topics covered include definitions of counseling and psychotherapy, roles of the psychotherapist, client motivation, phases of psychotherapy, empathy, eye contact, proxemics, paralanguage, silence, listening for verbal and non-verbal messages, closed, open-ended questions, summarizing, paraphrasing, emotional reflections, effectiveness of psychotherapy, problem formulation, goals/objectives, suicide risk assessment and crisis intervention as well as managing boundaries. Includes 6 hours of theoretical and practical learning, applied clinical exercises, as well as 1 to 2 hours of clinical practice (practicum) and 2 to 3 hours of supervision per week. Graded P/F.

IPA 6136 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY I (PART 2 OF 2) (3cr.)

Consolidation of basic counselling and psychotherapy skills and development of advanced skills. Other topics covered include conceptualization and treatment planning, confrontation, interpretation self-openness and self-commitment, immediacy, resistance, and termination of psychotherapy. In addition, the student learns to welcome, assess, and work with a person presenting with symptoms of depression and anxiety. Humanistic, cognitive-behavioural and existential approaches are emphasized. Other themes: existential and spiritual issues, safe and effective use of self, transference and countertransference, compassion fatigue, multicultural competence, microaggressions.

Includes 6 hours of theoretical and practical learning, applied clinical exercises, as well as 1 to 2 hours of clinical practice (practicum) and 2 to 3 hours of supervision per week. Graded P/F.

Prerequisite: IPA6135.

IPA 6137 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY II (3cr.)

Deepening of clinical techniques and skills in counselling and psychotherapy gained from IPA6135 and IPA6136 through direct clinical contact with clients. Includes an average of 5 hours of practice (practicum) and 2 to 3 hours of supervision per week. Graded P/F.

 

Prerequisite: IPA6136.

IPA 6138 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY III (PART 1 OF 2) (3cr.)

Continued consolidation of basic counselling / psychotherapy skills learned and development of new advanced skills, delving into clients' emotions and promoting awareness and change in clients. Other topics covered include professional ethics and record keeping, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues in the context of counselling and psychotherapy, video and face-to-face psychotherapy; psychotherapeutic process, advanced case conceptualization (approaches), Gestalt techniques, post-traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, sexual abuse, gender-based violence, spiritual abuse, safe and effective use of self, self-awareness and self-compassion. Includes 6 hours of theoretical and practical learning, applied clinical exercises, as well as an average of 5 hours of clinical practice (practicum) and 2 to 3 hours of supervision per week. Graded P/F.

IPA 6139 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY III (PART 2 OF 2) (3cr.)

Consolidation of advanced skills. Some of the topics covered: psychological and spiritual coping strategies, emotional-spiritual bypassing, trauma and the brain, dissociation, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, the individuation process and human aging, the search for meaning, bereavement, the use of ritual in psychotherapy, anger, preparation for starting a private practice, safe and effective use of the self, self-awareness and self-compassion.  Includes 6 hours of theoretical and practical learning, applied clinical exercises, as well as an average of 5 hours of clinical practice (practicum) and 2 to 3 hours of supervision per week. Graded P/F.

IPA 6140 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN COUPLE AND FAMILY COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (PART 1 OF 4) (3cr.)

Introduction to systemic and relational counselling. Theoretical study of systems theory as applied to individual, couple, and family therapy. Introduction to assessment and conceptualization (attachment, systems, and socio-culturally integrative theories; foundational skills in managing sessions with couples and families). Introduction to relational and systemic counselling and psychotherapy skills using role plays, and video illustrations of structured intervention modalities (Psychoeducation, Emotionally Focused, Solution Focused, Cognitive Behavioural). Applied practice through work with clients under clinical supervision with registered psychotherapists, at the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre of Saint Paul University. Graded P/F.

IPA 6141 - INTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM IN COUPLE AND FAMILY COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY (PART 2 OF 4) (3cr.)

Deepening of clinical techniques and skills gained in IPA6140 through work with clients under clinical supervision with registered psychotherapists at the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre of Saint Paul University. Graded P/F.

 

Prerequisite: IPA6140.

IPA 6152 - THEOLOGY AND SPIRITUAL CARE (3cr.)

This course provides students with a critical theological understanding and means of developing the practice of pastoral ministry in the health care services. It presents an anthropological study of the human experience of health, illness, healing, suffering and dying, and a theological reflection on these in the light of the different Christian traditions. It presents the resources for care: principles of human development, principles of human helping; reflections on pastoral care practice; paradigms for care; skills for interpersonal caring; reflections on rituals used in caring; and insights into personalized religion and spirituality.

IPA 6156 - RESEARCH SEMINAR (3cr.)

Students are responsible for choosing a theme and obtaining approval from the research seminar’s director. The chosen theme must correspond to the students’ research interest, the thesis director’s areas of expertise or another professor who will collaboratively play the advisory role overseeing the development of the research project.

Prerequisite: IPA6155 RESEARCH SEMINAR PREPARATION.

IPA 6160 - CLINICAL PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL EDUCATION (CPSE) PRACTICUM I (6U) (6cr.)

This practicum/course provides a learning situation whereby students develop personal and professional qualifications for clinical work as a Psycho-Spiritual Care Practitioner. Students learn about the functions and concerns of psycho-spiritual care services. Students are trained in skills as they bear on the emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and religious needs of the patients, family and staff. This practicum consists of theoretical teaching about assessment, clinical intervention and topics related to the clinical context, group activities, placement, written exercises and personal development seminar.

IPA 6161 - CLINICAL PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL EDUCATION (CPSE) II (6U) (4cr.)

Students learn more of the functions and concerns of psycho-spiritual care services; to the organization of a psycho-spiritual care department; to the practices and procedures for the implementation of psycho-spiritual care. The following methods encompass this experiential learning: supervised practice of clinical work, lectures, seminars and didactics, personal development seminar, verbatim/ virtual visit reporting, role plays, individual supervision, and reflection reports.

Prerequisite: IPA6160.

 

IPA 6508 - PSYCHOPATHOLOGIE ET TRAITEMENT (3cr.)

Les concepts de normalité et d’anormalité sont étudiés en fonction des dimensions perceptuelles, cognitives et affectives de la personne. La distinction entre désordres névrotiques et psychotiques est démontrée. Les névroses, les réactions au stress, les facteurs psychologiques présents dans les désordres affectifs sont examinés en profondeur. Chaque catégorie diagnostique est traitée du point de vue de son étiologie, des indicateurs diagnostiques, de l’évaluation, de la recherche et du traitement. On présente, de plus, une compréhension des éléments qui favorisent chez l’individu, à partir de ses prédispositions génétiques, son degré de résistance au stress et aux traumatismes. L’interaction des facteurs stresseurs, inter et intra personnels et contextuels est examinée dans l’étiologie et le développement d’un fonctionnement normal et anormal. Et dans cette perspective, le fonctionnement anormal est perçu comme une tentative positive de survie.

IPA 6520 - THÉORIES DU COUNSELLING INDIVIDUEL ET DE LA PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE (3cr.)

Une vue d’ensemble de l’histoire de la théorie du counselling: principales tendances et orientations. Ce cours explique, à partir de l’interaction entre la pratique et la recherche, comment les théories s’élaborent. Il expose en profondeur les théories représentatives des courants actuels majeurs (c’est-à-dire expérientiel, cognitif, psychodynamique, behavioriste) avec une insistance sur l’intégration entre l’évaluation et le traitement dans le processus de counselling. Dans l’examen des diverses théories, une attention particulière est donnée à l’intégration entre la théorie, la recherche et la pratique. Chacune des théories est examinée en fonction de ses applications pratiques, c’est-à-dire efficacité et limites. Finalement, on étudie comment ces théories ont été utilisées dans la pratique du counselling pastoral, dans l’élaboration de modèles de counselling pastoral et dans le développement de la vie spirituelle et religieuse d’une personne.

IPA 6535 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING INDIVIDUEL ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE I (PARTIE 1 DE 2) (3cr.)

Initiation aux habiletés de base trans-théoriques, à l’évaluation des besoins des clients (entrevue d’accueil), à la rédaction des notes au dossier, à la confidentialité et au consentement éclairé ainsi qu’à l’utilisation sûre et efficace de soi. Thèmes spécifiques abordés entre autres : définitions du counselling et de la psychothérapie; rôles des psychothérapeutes; motivation de la personne qui consulte; phases de la psychothérapie; empathie, contact visuel, proxémie, paralangage, silence; écoute des messages verbaux et non-verbaux; questions fermées, ouvertes; résumé, paraphrase; reflets d’émotions; efficacité de la psychothérapie; formulation du problème, buts/objectifs; évaluation du risque suicidaire et intervention de crise; gestion des frontières. Comprend 6 heures d’apprentissage théorique et pratique, des exercices cliniques appliqués, ainsi que 1 à 2 heures de pratique clinique (stage) et 2 à 3 heures de supervision par semaine. Noté P/F.

IPA 6536 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING INDIVIDUEL ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE I (PARTIE 2 DE 2) (3cr.)

Consolidation des habiletés de base en counselling et psychothérapie et développent des habiletés avancées, thèmes abordés, conceptualisation et plan de traitement; confrontation; interprétation; ouverture de soi et engagement de soi; immédiateté; résistance; fin de psychothérapie. De plus, l’étudiant apprend à accueillir, évaluer et cheminer avec une personne présentant des symptômes de dépression et d’anxiété.  Les approches humaniste-rogérienne, cognitivo-comportementale et existentielle sont privilégiées. Autres thèmes :  enjeux existentiels et spirituels; utilisation sûre et efficace de soi : transfert et contre-transfert, fatigue de compassion, compétence multiculturelle, micro-agressions.   Comprend 6 heures d’apprentissage théorique et pratique, des exercices cliniques appliqués, ainsi que 1 à 2 heures de pratique clinique(stage) et 2 à 3 heures de supervision par semaine. IPA 6537 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING INDIVIDUEL ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE II (3cr.)

Approfondissement des techniques et habiletés en counselling et en psychothérapie acquises dans le cadre des cours IPA6535 et IPA6536 lors de contacts cliniques directs avec des clients. Comprend en moyenne 5 heures de pratique (stage) et de 2 à 3 heures de supervision par semaine. Noté P/F.

IPA 6538 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING INDIVIDUEL ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE III (PARTIE 1 DE 2) (3cr.)

Poursuite de la consolidation des habiletés de base en counselling / psychothérapie apprises et développement de nouvelles habiletés avancées. Approfondir les émotions des clients et promouvoir la conscientisation et le changement chez ceux-ci. Thèmes spécifiques abordés, entre autres : révision de l’éthique professionnelle et tenue de dossiers; l’enjeu de l’équité, de la diversité et de l’inclusion en counselling et psychothérapie; visiothérapie et psychothérapie en présentiel, processus psychothérapeutique; conceptualisation avancée de cas, techniques de Gestalt; état de stress post-traumatique; trauma complexe; abus sexuel; violence fondée sur le genre; abus spirituel; utilisation sûre et efficace de soi : connaissance de soi et auto-compassion. Comprend 6 heures d’apprentissage théorique et pratique, des exercices cliniques appliqués, ainsi qu’en moyenne 5 heures de pratique (stage) et 2 à 3 heures de supervision par semaine. Noté P/F.

IPA 6539 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING INDIVIDUEL ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE III (PARTIE 2 DE 2) (3cr.)

Consolidation des habiletés avancées. Thèmes spécifiques abordés, entre autres : stratégies d’adaptation psychologiques et spirituelles; contournement émotionnel-spirituel; trauma et cerveau; dissociation; trouble panique avec ou sans agoraphobie; processus d’individuation et le vieillissement humain; quête de sens; deuil; utilisation du rituel en psychothérapie; colère; préparation au démarrage d’une pratique privée; utilisation sûre et efficace de soi : connaissance de soi et auto-compassion. Comprend 6 heures d’apprentissage théorique et pratique, des exercices cliniques appliqués, ainsi qu’en moyenne 5 heures de pratique clinique (stage) et 2 à 3 heures de supervision par semaine. IPA 6540 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE DE COUPLE ET DE LA FAMILLE (PARTIE 1 DE 4) (3cr.)

Introduction au counselling systémique et relationnel. Étude théorique de la théorie des systèmes appliquée à la thérapie individuelle, de couple et familiale. Introduction à l’évaluation et à la conceptualisation (théorie de l’attachement, théorie des systèmes, théories d’intégration socioculturelle), habiletés de base dans la gestion des séances avec les couples et les familles). Introduction aux habiletés de counselling relationnel et systémique et de psychothérapie par l’utilisation de jeux de rôle et l’illustration en vidéo des modalités d’intervention structurées (psychoéducation, axée sur les émotions, axée sur les solutions, cognitivo-comportementale). Stage pratique avec des clients sous la supervision clinique de psychothérapeutes autorisés au Centre de counselling et de psychothérapie de l’Université Saint-Paul. Noté P/F.

IPA 6541 - PRACTICUM CLINIQUE INTERNE EN COUNSELLING ET PSYCHOTHÉRAPIE DE COUPLE ET DE LA FAMILLE (PARTIE 2 DE 4) (3cr.)

Approfondissement des techniques et habiletés cliniques acquises au cours de IPA6540 par le travail avec des clients sous supervision clinique des psychothérapeutes autorisés au Centre de counselling et de psychothérapie de l'Université Saint-Paul. Noté P/F.

IPA 6552 - THÉOLOGIE ET SOINS SPIRITUELS (3cr.)

Ce cours offre aux étudiants une compréhension théologique critique et fournit les moyens de développer la pratique du ministère pastoral dans les services en soins de santé. Il présente une étude anthropologique de l’expérience humaine de la santé, de la maladie, de la guérison, de la souffrance, et de la mort, accompagnée d’une réflexion théologique basée sur différentes traditions chrétiennes. Il présente aussi les ressources suivantes : les principes du développement humain et de l’aide aux autres; la réflexion sur la pratique des soins pastoraux et des divers modèles de soins de santé; les habiletés requises à l’exercice de ces soins, ainsi qu’une réflexion sur les rites utilisés; enfin, l’étude de la religion personnalisée et de la spiritualité.

IPA 6556 - SÉMINAIRE DE RECHERCHE (3cr.)

L’étudiant est responsable de choisir un thème et d’obtenir l’approbation du directeur du séminaire de recherche. Le thème choisi doit correspondre à la fois aux intérêts de recherche de l’étudiant et à l’expertise de recherche du directeur du séminaire ou à celle d’un autre professeur qui servirait alors de conseiller quant au développement du projet de recherche.

IPA 6560 - ÉDUCATION PSYCHO-SPIRITUELLE CLINIQUE I (6CR) (6cr.)

Ce practicum/cours vise l’acquisition d’aptitudes personnelles et professionnelles essentielles au travail clinique d’un praticien en soins psycho-spirituels. Fonctions et problématiques afférentes aux services offerts en soins psycho-spirituels. Habiletés de présence et d’écoute des besoins émotionnels, cognitifs, spirituels et religieux des patients, des familles et du personnel hospitalier. Ce practicum comprend de l’enseignement théorique sur l’évaluation, les interventions cliniques et des thèmes reliés au contexte clinique, des activités de groupe, de la pratique supervisée sur le terrain, de la supervision individuelle, des exercices écrits et un séminaire de développement personnel.

IPA 6561 - ÉDUCATION PSYCHO-SPIRITUELLE CLINIQUE II (6CR) (6cr.)

Approfondissement des connaissances des fonctions et problématiques afférentes aux services offerts en soins psycho-spirituels, organisation d’un service de soins psycho-spirituels, ainsi que pratiques et procédures de mise en œuvre de soins psycho-spirituels. Ce practicum comprend la supervision du travail clinique, des conférences, des séminaires et cours, un séminaire de développement personnel, la transcription de verbatim, des jeux de rôle, de la supervision individuelle et des réflexions sur le travail clinique (parfois sous forme de rapports).

IPA 7104 - THEORIES OF COUPLE COUNSELLING (3cr.)

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the history and nature of theories of couple counselling. This course will introduce the central theories and concepts guiding couple therapy, including attachment, family systems, Emotionally Focused, experiential, and humanistic and the recent research related to couple therapy. There will be a particular focus on the skills, assessment and practice associated with Emotionally Focused therapy. Couple relationships both on the conscious and unconscious levels of functioning are examined and conceptualized.

IPA 7128 - EXTERNAL CLINICAL PRACTICUM (0 cr.)

In this supervised field practicum, the student offers counselling services at a community centre or an agency located outside campus. Graded P/F.

Prerequisite: Obtaining the grade "P" (Pass) to all evaluation items in the course IPA6221.

Corequisites : IPA6321 or IPA7221 ou IPA7205

IPA 7162 - CLINICAL PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL EDUCATION (CPSE) III (6U) (6cr.)

Students learn advanced skills in clinical work to the sick, their families, as well as other specific settings in keeping with the students learning goals. They perfect and consolidate evaluation skills and clinical interventions and their identity as a psycho-spiritual practitioner. Students are responsible for more complex clinical situations such as palliative care and mental health. They are taught to foster teamwork in a caring community as part of a psycho-spiritual care team.

Prerequisite: IPA6161.

 

IPA 7504 - THÉORIES DE LA THÉRAPIE DE COUPLE (3cr.)

Introduction aux principales théories en thérapie de couple, incluant les théories de l’attachement, systémique, centrée sur les émotions, expérientielles, humanistes et aux recherches les plus récentes sur la thérapie de couple. Attention particulière consacrée aux habiletés, à l’évaluation et à la pratique de la thérapie centrée sur les émtions. Le fonctionnement conscient et inconscient des relations de couple est examiné et conceptualisé.

IPA 7528 - STAGE CLINIQUE EXTERNE (0 cr.)

Dans le cadre d’un stage clinique supervisé, l’étudiant rencontre, dans la communauté, des personnes souffrant de diverses difficultés. Noté P/F.

Préalable : IPA 6621 et avoir obtenu la cote « P » (pass) à tous les items contenus dans le formulaire d’évaluation de ce cours.

Concomitants : IPA6721 ou IPA7621 ou IPA7605

IPA 7562 - ÉDUCATION PSYCHO-SPIRITUELLE CLINIQUE III (6CR) (6cr.)

Développement d’habiletés cliniques avancées pour travailler auprès du personnel hospitalier, des malades et de leurs familles tout en respectant les objectifs d’apprentissage de l’étudiant. Consolidation des habiletés d’intervention et d’évaluation et de l’identité comme praticien en soins psycho-spirituels. L’étudiant est appelé à assumer des responsabilités dans des situations cliniques plus complexes comme celles des soins palliatifs et de la santé mentale. Il apprend à faire de son équipe de travail une communauté de sollicitude en soins psycho-spirituels.
