The Additional Qualifications in Religious Education (AQRE) is offered by Saint Paul University in collaboration with the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

This program is accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers. Teachers completing these courses with Saint Paul University will also receive six university credits that can be used towards building their career portfolio and salary placement evaluations.

The program is offered in three parts. Each part consists of two courses offered over two sessions (Summer/Fall, Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring or Spring/Summer – see below for the next course offering).

As required by the Ontario College of Teachers for certification, each part includes at least 125 working hours, 100 contact hours and 25 hours of practical work.

All three parts of the program are offered on the basis of sufficient registrations.

Part 1 will be offered Fall 2018/Winter 2019

Registration will be launched later this summer.

  • THO 2123 AQ Foundations in Religious Education (3cr)
  • THO2153 AQ  Selected Topics in Scripture I (3cr)

To register, the person must:

  • hold a certificate of qualification and registration from the Ontario College of Teachers;
  • be a member of the teaching staff in an Ontario Catholic School.

Part 1 Fees:

Administrative fee (non-refundable) – $ 30

Session A THO 2351AQ – $325

Session B THO 2123AQ – $325

Teachers with Ottawa Catholic School Board will be reimbursed for 50 % of the cost of the course upon successful completion of the Additional Qualification in Religious Education Part 1.

  • HUM2121 Ethical Leadership in Catholic Schools (3cr)
  • HUM2122 Leadership and Pedagogical Practices in Catholic Schools (3cr)

HUM 2121 - Ethical leadership in catholic schools

Study and integration of ethical leadership practises in the Catholic school system. Exploration of innovative strategies for ensuring safe, healthy, equitable and inclusive learning environments.

HUM 2122 - Leadership and pedagogical practices in catholic schools

Study and integration of fundamental pedagogical foundations, curriculum guidelines and expectations related to religious education in the Catholic school system. 

THO 2109 - The Church, Past, Present and Future

Exploration of development of the Church throughout its history through lenses of context, worldview and culture.

THO 2123 - Foundations in Religious Education

Background for understanding catechesis in relation to evangelization. Nature, object and role of catechesis in the Christian faith community.

THO 2129 - Contexts for Religious Education

Pedagogy of catechesis and the adaptation and inculturation of catechesis. Context, forms and methodologies of catechesis in the current socio-cultural and religious context.

THO 2153 - Selected Topics in Scripture I

Understanding the Bible as Sacred scriptures and the Christian journey of faith.
