In response to the current threat to the sustainability of many Indigenous languages, the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages.

On behalf of all the professors and administrative staff of Saint Paul University, I would therefore like to wish you Minwason Oski kijigan, which means “Happy new year” in Anicinàbemowin.

Often confused with Ojibwemowin, the Ojibwe or Chippewa language, Anicinàbemowin is an Indigenous language whose use extends over all the Anicinabeg (Algonquin) territory in the Kitchi Sipi (Ottawa River) valley.

As you know, Saint Paul University is located on unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin people. A few years ago we began a process of reconciliation with all the First Peoples in Canada. It is in this spirit that we created, in 2018, the position of Coordinator of Indigenous Initiatives. In 2019, we will endeavour more than ever before to highlight the Indigenous reality at the University by organizing various activities. Stay tuned!
