October 11 – WAR EDUCATION VS. PEACE EDUCATION

Deputy Director of the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies

University of Otago, New Zealand

Dr. Standish offers courses on conflict, peacebuilding practices, and contemplative and narrative pedagogies. Her research focuses on education and conflict, peace education, decolonizing education, Life-Ending Acts, Hope Curriculum, and meta-violence.   

• Mainstream education makes choices…what is shown, taught, censured, erased or ignored...by educating children to revere and imagine war. You give them a vocabulary of war literacy that relates to aggression and aspects of building self-esteem based on dominatory behaviour. 
• You can’t make people go to war without a convincing story about why they should put themselves at risk for the benefit of the ‘nation.’
• This session will illustrate a major story that sends people to war and keeps the act of war legitimate.
• Then, the session will demonstrate a critique of education for war by explaining what education for peace is.
