Public Lecture: It's hard to watch people die for a living: supporting palliative caregivers in long-term care

Saint Paul University's Graduate Diploma in Supportive Care and Spirituality in Palliation presents a public lecture by Dr. Mary Lou Kelley on supporting palliative care workers in long-term care settings. In Canada, long-term care homes serve individuals, often older adults with multiple medical conditions, who require ongoing formal support to complete activities of daily living. It is estimated that more than 20% of long-term care residents die each year and, as such, long-term care homes are commonly providing end-of-life care. In this lecture Dr. Kelley will discuss findings from a research project that promoted the use of a palliative approach to support residents and staff within long-term care homes. Through this project, participating long-term care homes developed palliative care programs and a toolkit of resources, enabling support staff to implement the palliative approach to care for and improve the quality of life of people who are dying in long-term care.
