The School of Social Communication is pleased to invite Ms. Iman Ibrahim to its “Brown Bag” event. Ms. Ibrahim will be giving a talk on some of her work, which examines the interconnections between Conflict, Media and Community-based Conflict Resolution. She will discuss the layers of conflict, dialogue vs. debate, and basic principles for media reporting on such complex issues. She will also address how the community-based conflict resolution approach relates to various levels of conflict transformation, including the approach adopted by the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR) when intervening in conflict zones to foster sustainable peace and security.


Ms. Iman Ibrahim
is presently the executive director of the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR). Prior to working with the Institute, she worked in conflict resolution at the Ombudsperson Office at the University of Ottawa. Iman has lived and worked in Kuwait, Egypt and Canada. She holds a 160-hour Third Party Neutral certificate from the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution, a master's degree in International Affairs and Conflict Resolution from Carleton University, a bachelor's degree in Humanities and Religion from Carleton University, a professional certificate in International Conflict Management, a certificate of Essentials for Ombuds from Osgoode Law School/Forum of Canadian Ombudsman, and a bachelor's degree in English Literature from Kuwait University.

Iman has been involved in the community in managing projects related to peacebuilding, multiculturalism, and interfaith dialogue to address various political issues, constructive integration of minorities, promotion of democratic values, and prevention of extremism. She has been a member of the Christian/Muslim Dialogue since 2005 and for nine years has been co-chair of the Ottawa chapter of the Canadian Peace Initiative calling to establish a Federal Department of Peace, a Canadian movement connected to similar campaigns in 40 countries. She authored several papers on the compatibility between Islam and democracy, nonviolent revolutions, police-crowd relations, and the reconciliation between Muslims and the West. In 2014, Iman was selected as one of four Canadians to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program in six US states under the theme of Human Rights and Interfaith Dialogue.
