Saint Paul University’s (SPU) School of Counselling, Psychotherapy and Spirituality is proud to announce that on Monday, October 15 , its Master of Arts in Counselling and Spirituality was officially recognized by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). SPU therefore becomes the first university in the National Capital Region to offer a Master of Arts in Counselling and Spirituality recognized by the CRPO.

Created in 2007 under the Psychotherapy Act, 2007 (which came into force on April 1, 2015) to enhance the safety of clients, the CRPO regulates the practice of registered psychotherapists in Ontario. In applying for recognition two years ago, SPU’s School of Counselling, Psychotherapy and Spirituality wanted above all to facilitate the accreditation process for its graduates.

Cynthia Bilodeau, the School’s director, explains: “This is great news for the program, the students and the community. On one hand, our students can enter their professional college and practise their profession more quickly after completing their studies. On the other hand, this institutional recognition attests to the quality of our program: it reinforces our collective pride!”

The School’s master’s program uses a teaching method that is unique in North America. It’s key feature? It allows students to practise under close supervision at the Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre. The Centre, which has been active in the community for 44 years, has some 800 clients. “The CRPO’s recognition of SPU’s MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy solidifies the Centre’s excellent reputation,” says Michael Machan, director and coordinator of professional services at the Centre.

To date, hundreds of students have obtained the Master of Arts offered by Saint Paul University’s School of Counselling, Psychotherapy and Spirituality. The program has some 120 students from across Canada and around the world. |
