Introduction to Leadership, Ecology and Equity

A team of professors from the School of Leadership, Ecology, and Equity, led by Prof. Heather Eaton, is offering a summer school.

Short Description

Geared toward sustainable eco-social change, this course will explore the intersections among leadership, eco-justice and social equity. Through classroom teaching, discussing concrete examples, and visits to relevant sites, students will engage with issues such as climate change, loss of biodiversity and food insecurity. Insights from integral ecology, environmental humanities, transformative leadership, eco-literacy and eco-justice will help students develop connections between personal, social, political and ecological concerns.

Teaching Modalities

  • This is a credited university course worth three units.
  • The course is in-person only. It is a three-week intensive course, running from Tuesday to Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm, starting on June 10 and ending on June 26, 2025.
  • No prerequisites are required. Auditors and special students are welcome.
  • Certificate of completion available after final grading.

Course Goals

  1. To understand what leadership, ecology and equity mean.
  2. To develop connections among personal, ecological and social issues.
  3. To learn about equity, ecojustice efforts and social actions.
  4. To engage in transformative leadership from a nonviolent social change perspective.
  5. To appreciate the importance of ecological literacy and the connections from the personal to the biosphere.
  6. To study positive and constructive examples of eco-social change that bring hope.
