Small University, Big Heart: More than $33K raised to support Saint Paul University students during pandemic

Ottawa (Ontario), Thursday, June 18 2020 — On April 9, 2020, Saint Paul University (SPU) launched the COVID-19 Emergency Fund for students who were financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundraising campaign for the Emergency Fund raised over $33,000, more than tripling the original goal of $10,000.

“This spectacular achievement says a lot about our staff and our university,” said Chantal Beauvais, rector of Saint Paul University. “We may be a small university, but we have a big heart.”

The vast majority of funds were raised through individual donations from SPU faculty and staff. Group contributions were also made by the Saint Paul University Students Association (SPUSA), SPU Professors Association, the local chapter of part-time faculty affiliated with the Public Service Alliance of Canada, and staff represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation.

To date, funds have been distributed to more than 80 students – both international and Canadian. Students have reported using these funds to pay rent and bills, buy groceries and to purchase a laptop in order to continue their studies online.

While the current campaign ended June 1, there are plans to relaunch another fundraising initiative in the fall.
