Glasmacher Conference: René Girard: His Life, His Work, His Impact

rené girard

Presenter: Sandor Goodhart

Description: Drawing on his personal memories of Girard, having known him since the 1970s, Sandor Goodhart, currently a Professor of English and Jewish Studies at Purdue University and former President of the Colloquium on Violence and Religion, will trace the evolution of Girard's ideas, including his interaction with key intellectual figures of the twentieth century – Derrida, Levinas, Levi-Strauss, Barthes, Lacan, and Foucault. He will provide insights on the humanity of Girard as he shows the power and breadth of the mimetic theory Girard developed. Goodhart will examine the impact of Girard on how we read the Jewish and Christian scriptures and how this reading has implications not only for Jews and Christians, but also for society generally. In this he will refer to theological figures such as Jesuit theologian Raymund Schwager (a close friend of Girard's).

When: 7:30 p.m., November 3, 2016

Where: Auditorium G203, Saint Paul University

Target audience: People interested in mimetic theory as it pertains to theology, conflict studies, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy.
