Orange Shirt Day
Each year on September 30th Canadians are encouraged to wear orange to show support for Indigenous Peoples who attended residential schools.
Phyllis Webstad founded Orange Shirt Day to raise awareness about the residential school system and to honour survivors and their families. The day is named for Phyllis’ own experience. At six years old, her new orange shirt – a gift from her grandmother – was taken from her on her first day at the residential school.
