New publication: "Adrift of Alienation: Mapping Lyotard’s Critique of Althusser" by Matthew McLennan

This article, co-written with T. Mars McDougall of the University of California at Irvine, unpacks, interprets, and argues for importance of the philosopher J.-F. Lyotard's critique of Louis Althusser. At issue is the concept of alienation, and how the latter works in the discourse of Karl Marx. Whereas Althusser holds the concept to be absent from the mature Marx's writings, Lyotard shows how it remains present implicitly, and how it is still a useful concept to help us analyze labour in post-industrial societies.
