New course: Theories of Local Governance and Applied Approaches to Citymaking

Join the School of Social Innovation and Synapcity for a dynamic course on Civic Engagement!

Focused on the study and practice of citizen impact on cities in general and the National Capital Region (Ottawa, Canada) in particular, this course introduces students to the practical application of local civic engagement. Students will have the opportunity to work with a representatively diverse group of Ottawa residents enrolled in Synapcity’s City Lab to understand and address important municipal issues. This class will be a collaboration between Synapcity, Saint Paul University, and other organizations aiming to address relevant local issues.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

As a result of attending this course, students will be able to:

  • Hold a mindset that will enable students to constructively initiate and sustain community, political and civic change.
  • Describe the structures and processes of local governance in shaping cities.
  • Identify opportunities for citizen involvement.
  • Select and apply the appropriate tools to constructively address a neighbourhood, community or city-wide challenge.
  • Identify and assess stakeholders who impact a neighbourhood/community/city challenge and strategically prioritize actions to engage, work and collaborate with them.
  • Appreciate and analyze diverse perspectives in neighbourhood, community or city challenges and learn how to create messages in order to align those diverse perspectives.
  • Envision and articulate an ideal future regarding a neighbourhood, community or city challenge.
  • Formulate a case for new approaches and strategies to address current municipal issues.
