Archival Services

Welcome to Saint Paul University’s Archival Services.

We accept into our archival fonds administrative and historical documents of Saint Paul University primarily going back to July 1, 1965. Although we have a long and rich history beginning in 1848 with the founding of the Collège de Bytown, the archives that go back beyond July 1, 1965, have been given to the University of Ottawa in keeping with respect des fonds, a fundamental principle in archival science that consists of grouping archives of all categories from the same source. Our two institutions having a shared history, it can be difficult at times to identify what belongs to one or the other university.

We therefore have 20 fonds and collections corresponding to Saint Paul University’s different administrative units, faculties and schools. To these are added the archival fonds of the Saint Paul University Seminary (1937–2010) and those of Novalis Publishing (1935–2000).

In addition to SPU’s administrative and historical fonds, Archival Services houses 31 private fonds and archival collections as well as archival fonds being kept on its premises, such as those of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Archival Services is open Monday–Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. Visits are by appointment only; please contact archives@ustpaul.ca.
