How is clerical sexual abuse distinct from other forms of sexual abuse?  What are the personal and collective pathologies underlying abuse and the conspiracies of silence?  Are collective values and patterns changing? This seminar will incorporate insights from Beyond ‘Bad Apples’, a major study on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church that was published in August of 2022.

Presenter

Mark Slatter, a priest with the archdiocese of Ottawa, Canada, obtained his doctorate in moral theology from the Gregorian University in Rome in 2007, and worked at The Ottawa Mission with the homeless and those struggling with substance abuse from 2000 to 2016, and is Associate Professor of Theological Ethics at Saint Paul University in Ottawa.  He is the author of Insights While Suffering (Peter Lang, 2016) and is currently writing a book on pornography addiction and Catholic morality. He lives at Waupoos Family Farm on the outskirts of Ottawa, an outreach that provides vacations to low-income families.
