Dr. Hazel Markwell

Date: January 30, 2019, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Guigues Hall, Room 202

The Supreme Court of Canada recently ruled that Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is exempt from criminal prosecution under certain conditions. This talk will be a discussion of how this decision and the ensuing legislation challenges our notions of a good life and the meaning of suffering and death. It will also discuss how this position affects end-of-life care in general, and most importantly how it impacts human dignity. The talk will highlight the need for a greater understanding of and distinction between the appropriate withholding/withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and euthanasia/physician-assisted death.

Hazel Markwell is the inaugural Chair in Bioethics at Saint Paul University. She was the former Executive Director of the Centre for Clinical Ethics in Toronto and has lectured nationally and internationally on bioethics and theology. She has two children and five grandchildren; she lives in Toronto and Ottawa.
