Evening Lecture: Do People Always Grow Through Suffering?

Mark Slatter

Location: Guigues Hall, Room 1124

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” … “No pain, no gain”. Nice maxims, but are they true? On the other hand, can you think of one proverb that speaks to suffering’s disintegrative effects on us? This breach in our vocabulary is conspicuous. What are some of our premises about growth through suffering? Are they reasonable, do they expect too much from people, or do they need to adjust to the reality?
