Eastern Christian Studies at Saint Paul University

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE

Eastern Christian Studies at Saint Paul University

Ottawa, February 8, 2018 - The Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University confirms the continuation of Eastern Christian Studies at the University as an integral part of its programs. Recently, the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops of Canada announced the relocation of Holy Spirit Seminary from Ottawa to Edmonton.

We were sorry to hear Holy Spirit Seminary's relocation announcement, as we are proud to have worked together for the formation of Ukrainian Catholic clergy for almost 30 years. At the same time, we thank the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops of Canada for their trust in us, and ask God's blessing on the Seminary community as its continues its life in Edmonton.

We want to reassure our community that courses in Eastern Christian Studies will continue to be taught by qualified faculty. Interested students of the Eastern or Western Christian traditions, as well as students who do not identify with a particular tradition, will be welcome to take advantage of these courses as an opportunity for personal growth or professional training.

The Faculty of Theology sees itself as a crossroads of Western and Eastern Christianity, and will continue to develop resources to strengthen the possibilities for dialogue between the Christian West and Christian East.

Saint Paul University is the only university of the Roman Catholic tradition in Canada that has a full-time member of its Faculty of Theology from the Orthodox tradition, which testifies to its ongoing commitment to do theological research from this perspective.

While the Faculty of Theology at the University has traditionally trained candidates for ministry in the Church, it also has a wider commitment to train all persons desiring a deeper knowledge of the richness of theology and of the relevance of this time-honoured field of study to other academic disciplines. Within this vision of the enduring value of theology to the Church and the academy, the Eastern Christian Studies program has played and will continue to play a critical role.

Saint Paul University is the founding college (1848) of the University of Ottawa, with which it has been federated since 1965. Bilingual and on a human scale, it offers programs in social communication, counselling and psychotherapy, canon law, public ethics, conflict studies, social innovation, philosophy, human relations, and theology.
