Dr. Catherine Clifford wrote a column for Ottawa Life magazine as part of the 500th anniversary of the events of the Protestant Reformation in 1517. She notes that “Luther’s call for the reform of the Roman church triggered a heated confrontation … Since 1967, Lutherans and Catholics have engaged in a process of dialogue that has dispelled many misunderstandings and helped overcome doctrinal disagreement.” This movement culminated with a joint declaration on justification by faith that has been agreed to by Catholics and many Protestants alike. This statement, along with common prayer, study, friendship, and service, indicates greater unity between the churches in the years to come. |
