Canada – Flag Day

Flag Day CanadaThough of simple design, with its red and white – our national colours – and a single maple leaf, a symbol that has been recognized for over 300 years, our flag was proclaimed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on January 28, 1965, and raised for the first time in ceremony on Parliament Hill on February 15, 1965. On that day, the Hon. Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate, stated: “The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.”

In these very challenging times, when we are faced with the threat of ideological polarization, isolationism and ethnic segregation, these wise words serve as a reminder that a nation cannot sustain itself unless it remains animated by a deep longing to form a living community.
