FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Archbishop Donald Bolen named Saint Paul University’s 2017 Alumnus of the Year

Ottawa, September 29, 2017 – Saint Paul University is proud to present the 2017 Alumnus of the Year Award to Archbishop Donald Bolen. Pope Francis appointed Bishop Bolen as the eighth Archbishop of Regina, formerly Bishop of Saskatoon, on Monday, July 11, 2016. The official installation ceremony was held on October 14, 2016 at Holy Rosary Cathedral.

This award recognizes the outstanding achievement of one of our alumni. Archbishop Donald Bolen has demonstrated through his personal and professional mission a steadfast commitment towards healthier and more vibrant communities. He is best known for his extensive work in the field of ecumenism, which has spanned two decades and greatly advanced ecumenical dialogue on an international level. Archbishop Bolen is well known for his outstanding support of Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan and his dedication to numerous charitable causes. His extensive résumé also includes a large body of work in both teaching and leadership roles.

“Archbishop Bolen’s contributions towards the enhancement of social justice and the achievement of a more inclusive and compassionate society clearly demonstrate a strong alignment with the mission of our university. As the recipient of the Saint Paul University Alumnus of the Year award for 2016-2017, he joins the company of many well-accomplished and celebrated men and women who have made and are making significant impacts and contributions to building a more humane society,” said Chantal Beauvais, Saint Paul University Rector.

“I am pleased to learn of the signal honour which Saint Paul University is conferring on Archbishop Bolen as Alumnus of the Year. Archbishop Bolen is well-known for espousing the path to reconciliation: among Christian bodies through his commitment to ecumenism; in society by his devotion to Indigenous peoples; and in his preoccupation to identify with and serve the urban poor,” said Archbishop Prendergast.

Archbishop Bolen obtained his Honours Bachelor's degree in Religious Studies with a minor in English from Campion College at the University of Regina. Later, he entered the Seminary of Saint Paul in Ottawa, and completed his theological studies at Saint Paul University, obtaining a Bachelor's, Master's and Licentiate in Theology.

We are pleased to present our Alumnus of the Year Award to such a deserving recipient.
