Snack and Chat: Taxes, Inequality, and Justice: Mining and the Canada-Guatemala connection

82% of the wealth generated in 2017 went to the richest 1% of the global population, while the 3.7 billion people who make up the poorest half of the world saw no increase in their wealth.

Want to know how taxes are related to that?

Join us in an informal dialogue with Paola Ortiz Loaiza, PhD Candidate in International Development at University of Ottawa, to understand how a change in the taxation system could actually signify a change in inequality and promote social justice.

Based on the case of Canadian mining companies and taxes in Guatemala, we will discuss how taxes, inequality, and justice are related. The mining case in Guatemala presents an opportunity to explore and document how the Guatemalan and Canadian mining tax systems work, and the values they support.
