The Additional Qualifications in Religious Education (AQRE) is offered by the Ottawa Catholic District School Board, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, and Saint Paul University.

The program is offered in three parts. Each part consists of two courses (which includes three modules) offered over two sessions (Summer/Fall, Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring or Spring/Summer – see below for the next course offering). Individual modules are offered onsite, or online or hybrid (online and onsite).

As required by the Ontario College of Teachers for certification, each part includes at least 125 working hours, 100 contact hours and 25 hours of practical work.

All three parts of the program are offered on the basis of sufficient registrations.

Registration form

To register, the person must:

  • hold a certificate of qualification and registration from the Ontario College of Teachers;
  • be a member of the teaching staff  in an Ontario Catholic School.

THO 2123 - Foundations in Religious Education

Background for understanding catechesis in relation to evangelization. Nature, object and role of catechesis in the Christian faith community.

THO 2124 - Methods and Practices in Religious Education

Norms and criteria for presenting the Gospel message in catechesis. Sources, structure, content and practices of catechesis in the current life of the Church.

THO 2361 - Gospels and Christian Moral Living

Post-Vatican II directives for catechesis, and an examination of Canadian catechetical resources for use in family, parish, and school settings

THO 2366 - Seminar: Course in Catechical and Pastoral Issues

THO 2368 - Seminar: Courses Ethical Issues
