Course description:
This course is about ecological and social challenges in South Africa, with a focus on human–animal relations in an era of ecological stress. South Africa’s animals are threatened with habitat loss, hunting and climate change. We will study with naturalist and animal expert Bennet de Klerk at Motsumi Bush Camp and Pilansberg Game Reserve. We will study South Africa’s historical and current challenges and contributions, and post-apartheid situation in the Johannesburg area. The learning outcomes are to experience South Africa, to encounter and learn about animals, to study the social and ecological realities, and to see efforts for conservation, innovation and justice.
