Presenter: Sheila Smith, RSCJ, is a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University. Her area of research draws on the ethical thought of Paul Ricoeur, in order to better understand a Christian response to the need for better Indigenous– settler relations in Canada. As a member of the international Roman Catholic women’s religious congregation the Society of the Sacred Heart, she has worked for over 30 years in Aboriginal communities in Canada in the areas of education, pastoral ministry, and human trafficking prevention.

Date: Wednesday, March 29, 7-8 pm

Location: Saint Paul University, room G105

Description: Too often, indigenous issues are seen as the unique problems of Indigenous peoples. However, Canada is deeply implicated in creating issues facing Indigenous peoples. A Christian view of reconciliation can help Canadians understand and address settler colonialism in Canada. This webinar will explore the concepts of settler colonialism and Christian reconciliation, with a view to better understanding the role of settlers in the practice of truth, healing, and reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and settler Canadians.
