Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the U-Pass cost?

The cost of the U-Pass for the 2022–2023 academic year is $223.48 per semester and is mandatory for full-time students.

Who is entitled to a U-Pass?

The U-Pass is a mandatory program for full-time students. There are, however, certain circumstances under which a student can be exempted from the program. See the Exemptions section for more details.

Is the U-Pass program mandatory?

Yes. The U-Pass program is mandatory for full-time students.

What is a Summer U-Pass?

The Summer U-Pass is a new fare product that provides eligible college and university students with unlimited access to all OC Transpo and STO services from May 1 to August 31. The summer U-Pass is available to any college and university student who is registered as full-time per their institution’s definition of student status.

Will I be able to claim the U-Pass on my taxes?

As of July 1, 2017, this fee is no longer tax deductible.

Validity

Is the U-Pass valid during the summer months?

Yes. The U-Pass program runs from September 1 to April 30 and from May 1 to August 31 for students registered full-time.

Are part-time students eligible for the U-Pass program?

No. Only full-time students are eligible for the program.

I do not have a full-time course load, but I am considered full-time by the University. Am I eligible for the U-Pass program?

Yes. If you are considered full-time by the University, then you are eligible to opt in to the U-Pass program.

On which routes can I use my U-Pass?

The U-Pass is valid on all OC Transpo vehicles providing regular, express, rural express, Para Transpo and O-Train service. Only Para Transpo service to rural zones requires a supplementary fare.

You can also use your U-Pass with the STO bus service.

Is my U-Pass valid on Para Transpo?

Yes, but for Para Transpo to rural zones there is a supplementary fare.

Is my U-Pass valid on STO?

Yes, the U-Pass is accepted on regular STO routes, following the same restrictions as OC Transpo pass holders riding on STO routes. See http://www.octranspo1.com/tickets-and-passes/u-pass/ for more details.

Exemptions

Is it possible to get exempted from the U-Pass program?

Although the U-Pass is a mandatory program for full-time students, there are certain circumstances under which a student may be exempted from the program.

To get an exemption, you must fill out an exemption form and provide the necessary documentation to prove your claim.

 

If I use a private bus company to get to campus (e.g., Leduc, 417 Bus Line), can I get exempted from the U-Pass program?

No. This does not qualify you for an exemption. For any questions regarding private bus companies and the U-Pass program, please contact OC Transpo.

If I qualify for an exemption but have been invoiced for the U-Pass, how do I get a refund?

If you have been charged for the U-Pass fee and you qualify for an exemption, you need to fill out an exemption application form and provide proof of your eligibility under one of the criteria mentioned on the Exemptions page.

I am only registering for full-time studies during the summer term. Will I be able to get a U-Pass?

Yes.
