A Generative Conference on Spirituality, Emergent Creativity and Reconciliation

Re-thinking, Re-knowing and Re-visioning:

Global Community,
Military Culture (Religious Leader Engagement and Reconciliation),
Development as Freedom, and
Legal Culture

May 23-26, 2012

Saint Paul University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa, ON

Orientation

Funded by the John Templeton Foundation, this conference brings together scientists, social scientists, activists, theologians, peacemakers, religious scholars, Indigenous people, and military personnel to examine how deep divisions within the human family can be understood and addressed. Reconciliation is understood as a goal and a process by which the hurts and resentments of deep-rooted conflict are transformed into mutually beneficial relationships. Though many factors contribute to reconciliation, there are matters of the human spirit that find expression in seemingly paradoxical ways. Since deep-rooted conflict and reconciliation are both complex phenomena, it is anticipated that the exchanges between those versed in the language and experience of spirituality and those who understand the new science of emergent creativity, rooted in complexity theory, will generate important new insights. These new insights will be both theoretical and practical. In fact, the interaction between philosophers and scientists and those who have pioneered significant peace, justice and environmental initiatives will produce another order of understanding. There will be plenty of room for spontaneous interactions, stimulated by significant presentations.

Each day has a theme, but the themes criss-cross the schedule. The first day is on global community, the second on new developments in the military, and the third on development as freedom. An optional fourth day on legal culture examines the context and implications of Recognition Legislation being introduced in the Senate of Canada that would create a legal space for Indigenous law, government and institutions.
