Saint Paul University will award the second Eugene de Mazenod medal

Saint Paul University will award the second Eugene de Mazenod medal to Sister Claudette Brunet, S.S.M.N., during a ceremony which will take place in the De Mazenod Chapel, on Friday, February 17th, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.

This medal, bearing the name of the founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, recognizes Eugene de Mazenod’s primary concern, adapting to people’s real situations, by showing boldness and zeal in dealing with urgent societal issues. The Eugene de Mazenod medal honours a person who has made a significant contribution to developing human capital in his or her environment or more widely in society.

Sr. Claudette Brunet is a Sister of Saint Mary of Namur who has spent her life working with young people (adolescents and young adults). After completing post-secondary studies at Collège Bruyère and the University of Ottawa, she taught high school for several years in several Ontario francophone schools. At the beginning of the 1980s, she left teaching to be part of a student residence project. In 1983, under her leadership, this project found a home at 101 Parent Avenue in Ottawa. She has become known for this initiative ever since. At the house, she launched a number of activities whose aim was educating youth, especially when it came to spiritual growth: “Thursday Nights at 101 Parent,” Taizé prayer and pilgrimages to Taizé, France, a missionary project in the Dominican Republic called “Solidarité Jeunesse”, and dozens of other projects, carried out with the help of other sisters of her community and a number of Oblate priests. She also worked in the Archdiocese of Ottawa’s Youth Office for five years. Today, for the 29th consecutive year, she lives and works in the little house on Parent Avenue, surrounded by young people who are, for her, an everlasting source of motivation, innovation and thanksgiving.

Please join us in this second ceremony of award of the Eugene de Mazenod medal.
