Six Semester JCL Curriculum within Two Calendar Years beginning Fall 2012
The Faculty of Canon Law of Saint Paul University, Ottawa, announces that, beginning September 2012, the curriculum for the JCL will be offered within six sessions over a period of two calendar years. Courses will be taught in the Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer sessions each year.
This is in accordance with the Decree Revising the Order of Studies in the Faculties and Departments of Canon Law of the Congregation for Catholic Education (2 September 2002) requiring that the courses for the Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL) be taught over "three years or six semesters" (I, b).
This modification in the existing curriculum provides canonical formation in all the areas identified in the Decree of the Congregation for Catholic Education (II, 2):
• The Code of Canon Law
• Related disciplines: theology of canon law, philosophy of law, fundamental concepts
of Roman law; elements of civil law; history of the fundamental canonical structures
of canon law; history of the sources of canon law; the relationship between the
Church and civil society; canonical administrative and judicial praxis
• Introduction to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches
• Latin
• Optional courses, exercises, and seminars.
Offering this curriculum over six semesters within two calendar years responds to the voiced needs of diocesan bishops, superiors, and others who face pressing personnel needs in their dioceses, institutes of consecrated life, or societies of apostolic life.
Those enrolled in the JCL curriculum will also receive the civil Graduate Diploma in Canon Law, Graduate Diploma in Canonical Practice, and Masters of Canon Law (MCL) from the University of Ottawa.
